The ram lamb Appleby was booked with a deposit by someone when he was only 6 weeks old.

He has been weaned, wormed and had all his vaccines even been shorn so he doesn’t melt in this hot summer weather we are having.

When putting in the ear tags I find that dipping all of the sharp point, from top to bottom, that goes through the ear with iodine prevents any infections.

Once the pointy bit has had a thorough dip in the Iodine I put them on the ear piercing/tagging tool.

It is very important to hold the lambs head very firmly when ear tagging. They will jerk their head with a start at the momentary feeling of pain as the tag goes into their ear. If you do not hold the animal firmly you can tear their ear quite badly.

Appleby was not impressed with that bit of handling but needs must for traceability etc. Once he is tagged it’s time to be loaded onto trailer to head on to his new home.
