With 130 pedigree Zwartbles sheep on offer at Ballymena Livestock Mart on 1st August, there will an opportunity to buy into stock from some of the top winning Zwartbles flocks in Northern Ireland. Included in this sale of rams, ewes and lambs are bloodlines representing some of the top UK flocks too. Catalogues are available telephone/txt 0044 7885 065531.

Zwartbles Sheep are an ideal crossing breed for those wishing to produce commercial ewes for future breeding. Crossing successfully with any breed to produce ewes with length, pelvic area for easy lambing and the all important ‘milking’ gene which improves milking capacity, so important for getting lambs off to a good start. The results are good whether you use a Zwartbles ram to cross-breed or another breed of ram on Zwartbles ewes.

At the RUAS 2013 Zwartbles sheep made history by being chosen reserve Interbreed Champion pairs and Reserve Interbreed Champion group of three, out of a total of 21 sheep breeds.

This was the first time that Zwartbles sheep had ever been so highly placed in the sheep interbreed classes at a major Royal Show. In only the breed’s seventh year of being shown at Balmoral, this was a tremendous achievement.

The judge on this occasion, Mr McClymont, said he was “hugely impressed with the Zwartbles sheep and commented that they were big powerful sheep with excellent conformation and a leg in every corner. They oozed ring presence with good strength of bone and plenty of breed character, indeed a tremendous advert for the breed”.

Future Zwartbles sales: Dungannon 2nd August and an In-Lamb and Breeding Stock Sale with the date in November to be announced at Ballymena once again.

I have attached the Zwartbles Sale at Dungannon. All these sheep are eligible for export to ROI on the day should this be needed. Vendors are reminded to
see what documentation they need to ensure export if needed. Please contact your local DVO to be sure!

Looking forward to two good sales next week Ballymena on 1st August and Dungannon 2nd August.
