This morning I went out to see all the girls who were happy under the lime tree until I appeared. They all trotted out dutifully from under the tree when I shook the bucket.
The big white ewe in the foreground just stood there and didn’t budge as all the other sheep came up to the gate. She knew the game of bucket shake but no food. She even had the nerve to stick her tongue out at me.
The next field of ewe lambs and hoggets all just stayed put, lying down nice a cozy like a group of lazy teenagers and babies.
When I opened the gate and walked in with a bucket the temptation was too much and they all had to walk up the hill to see if I would give them any of the nuts in the bucket.
I went up to feed the boy’s their breakfast a bit later then usual and the black lamb was the only one still waiting. My first thought was that my pallet fence hadn’t worked and all the boy’s had escaped into the neighbors field. So I left the bucket on the far side of the gate so he couldn’t pig out all on his own. Looking out into the field I saw 3 more in the shed, on seeing me these came running over. Looking farther out into the field I could see the rest on the far side. I poured feed into the trough and the rest of the boy’s heard and came galloping from the far side of the field. They still wanted more once they had devoured their share of sheep nuts and showed it by pawing at the ground near the empty bucket.
I challenge you to view the video below and see if you can count how many ram lambs there are when they come running across the field.
The black lamb and the three from the shed are the first four.
